Marriage and Divorce Counseling
I provide couples counseling/marriage therapy with couples who are experiencing communication issues re: their relationship, parenting, intimacy and/or financial issues.
I mainly use EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), which is a treatment for marriage and/or couples counseling. Emotionally Focused Therapy is an evidence based treatment that has its basis in attachment theory and was pioneered by Dr. Sue Johnson. EFT was developed for couples looking to improve their relationship. This therapy seeks to ease depression, anxiety and PTSD in both individuals and couples/dyads. It helps people have a secure and safe haven within themselves and with others. It looks at the couple’s relationship through an attachment lens and helps couples identify their attachment style.
Attachment styles include:
- Secure attachment
- Anxious/ambivalent/resistant attachment
- Fearful avoidant attachment
- Disorganized/disoriented attachment
Sometimes based on an individual partner’s attachment style and/or a combination of the styles, this can lead to couples feeling insecure with each other. It can lead to what is known as the pursuer/distance stance in which one partner is in the role of pursuing, nagging, cajoling and the other partner is in the role of avoiding, withdrawing and/or stonewalling. EFT focuses on helping couples be A.R.E (Accessible, Responsive and Engaged) with each other and build healthy communication skills and get out of the pursuer/distance dynamic.
EFT can also be utilized with other appropriate dyads including adult parent/adult child.
